the SALIMA PROJECT
This documentary follows a group of 30 Malawian young adults, including some who are living with HIV/AIDS, as they participate in intensive theatre and teaching training, lead by one professional theatre artist from the United States and two from Malawi. They will work in physical theatre, storytelling, and directing for the stage. The 5-day intensive program will culminate with a performance festival by the entire group for the local community.
The subject: community health
Teaming up with a United States Peace Corps Volunteer who specializes in community health, the group will address local issues by telling stories about HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, a US film crew will be documenting the entire process. The team hopes that this type of work at the intersection of cultural development and health advocacy can be a model for future projects that empower local communities to tell their own stories and share them with the world.
